Nifty tricks to stay cool and save energy!

You might have already taken a splash in the relaxing Alterra swimming pool this summer and loved that it’s a cool place to beat the heat! But aside from the outdoor recreational methods, you can keep cool when in your apartment without wasting a lot of energy and money on air conditioning. Here are 10 simple ways to cool off this summer that you might never have thought about!

  1. Take a cool bath – you can get that private spa or pool feeling without leaving the luxury of your apartment.
  2. Soak a shirt or bandana in lukewarm water, wring out, and wear! Maybe enjoy the breeze on your porch for a fresh feeling.
  3. Keep air flowing in your home by opening up rooms with running ceiling fans. Running a fan in an enclosed room will waste energy and actually make the room warmer.
  4. Chill out on a lower level, because everyone knows heat rises.
  5. Add a touch of mint to your day, whether in a refreshing soap or lotion, ice-cream, or delicious beverage.
  6. Take it easy and don’t move around as much when it gets too hot. (Yes, this is a perfect excuse to put off chores until a cooler part of the day.)
  7. Seek shade when outside, especially during peak sunlight hours between 10am and 3pm.
  8. Slice a cucumber and place it over your eyes or on your forehead. It might look silly, but it feels great!
  9. Eating spicy or hot foods increases perspiration to cool your body down naturally and can actually counter the uncomfortable hot feeling!
  10. Think cool thoughts! Or just recall what winter was like! I can put you in a mentally cooler state of mind!
